Serialization

Serialization is a labelling method using barcodes. This is more prevalent in the manufacture and distribution of pharmaceutical and healthcare products.

Benefits of serialization:

Serialization using the Labelling Management System (LMS) has been of immense benefit in the healthcare sector where it is used for the traceability of pharmaceutical drugs, medicament and medical devises. It intervention has helped to reduce cases of counterfeit and substandard product, thereby reducing incidences of fatality.

Substandard and counterfeit product has brought so much pain, hardship and even death to so many people, especially in the healthcare and pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors. In a 2019 publication by National Center for Biotechnology Information on their website ( Published online 2019 Aug 15. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0217910) has it that estimated 12,300 deaths and $892 million ($890-$893 million) in costs annually in Nigeria, happens as a result of poor quality antimalarials in circulation.

It was also said, on WHO website, that 1 in 10 medical products circulation in low and medium income countries is either substandard or falsified (https://www.who.int/news/item/28-11-2017-1-in-10-medical-products-in-developing-countries-is-substandard-or-falsified). This demonstrates the enormity of this challenge and government all around the world have been formulating policies and enforcing them, trying to mitigate and reduce the scourge of substandard and falsified medical products.

This issue is also prevalent in the cosmetic industry where products and brands die annually as a result of faking the those cosmetic brands.

No less than N1.32 billion worth of unwholesome goods have been destroyed by the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The destroyed goods, which were generated from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo, included drugs, cosmetics, beverages and other regulated products.

Trends in Trade in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods puts the value of imported fake goods worldwide based on 2016 customs seizure data at USD 509 billion, up from USD 461 billion in 2013 (2.5% of world trade). For the European Union, counterfeit trade represented 6.8% of imports from non-EU countries, up from 5% in 2013. These figures do not include domestically produced and consumed fake goods, or pirated products being distributed via the Internet (OECD).

To further reduce the scourge of substandard and falsified medical products, National Agency of Food and Drug Control, NAFDAC, has developed a five-year traceability plan toward achieving supply chain visibility, noting that this would strengthen its pharmacovigilance and post-marketing activities.

NAFDAC DG, in a press release, added that the five-year plan was aimed at checking the scourge of Substandard and Falsified medicines and medical devices by the end of the year 2024,(https://healthwise.punchng.com/nafdac-launches-medicine-tracing-strategy-to-curb-fake-drugs).

In support and in line with NAFDAC directives, Value Synergy Ltd and her partners have put together a serialization and warehousing solutions for trace and tracking of both medical devices, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and cosmetic manufacturing processes to mitigate issues of counterfeiting, factory rejects and substandard product in the supply chain.

Serialization is the process of tracking individual saleable units of inventory with unique identifiers assigned sequentially to each item. Serialization allows manufacturers to use readable codes to track products back to their origins, determine which supply chain partners handled the products or packaging, find the specific components or ingredients that went into the final product track the item’s overall history

Our experience of benefits with other industries.

  1. A barcode on a consumer product, for example, can be used to identify suspect products in the case of a recall, or a customer can use a serial number on a package to verify that the product is authentic or to provide access for essential product information or promotion opportunity.
  2. The product shipped location can be monitored to determine the time in shipment and verify that product has reached various destinations.
  3. Distributors and wholesalers who have agreements with the brand owner can easily verify that packages found at retailers in their authorized regions have been adequately processed at their sites.
  4. Supply chains can be monitored to check on inventory levels and the timing of shipments.
